Great to chat to Nadio Granata about AI in Education.
What is the future of Education in the age of AI? To answer this, I spoke with Nadio Granata on the Education WithAI FM™ podcast series. We discussed the challenges in Education in a broad sense and then drilled down to some key areas such as:
Rethinking Assessment: We argued that current student assessment methods are challenged in the age of AI and proposed using AI-driven viva sessions as a more effective way to evaluate student knowledge over the longer term.
Embracing AI Tools: We emphasised the importance of students using AI tools, such as ChatGPT, and disclosing their use rather than viewing it as “cheating.” This prepares students for the workforce, where these tools will be readily available, and employers will expect graduates to come “AI-Ready.”
Bridging the Gap Between Students and Educators: The clip below shows the part of this discussion where I argued that students are often more digitally curious and adept at using AI tools than their educators. We stressed the need for educators to catch up and embrace these technologies to enhance the learning experience.
I mentioned my long-term collaborator, Dr Lynn Gribble from UNSW Business School, who has been a pioneer in this space for decades and someone I constantly learn from.
The emergence of Challenger Universities: With my Futurist hat on, I predicted the rise of “challenger universities” that leverage AI to offer more efficient and effective education, potentially disrupting traditional classroom learning.
Preparing Students for the Workforce: We also discussed the importance of equipping students with work-ready skills, such as handling disagreements, navigating professional environments, and developing presentation abilities, to prepare them for the workforce better.
I used my concept of “two tribes” in every organisation, including schools and Universities. Those “born digital” are already very comfortable with Generative AI tools, while the “going digital” are playing catchup and needing to become more digitally curious (there’s a book that can help them there).
A huge thanks to Nadio for trusting me as his first guest on the Education WithAI series and David Brown for producing such an excellent series. You can listen to the whole episode via the link in the comments.
